IMMIGRANTS FOR QUEENSLAND.

The Government has arranged with the Orient Company to bring out about 200 immigrants per fortnight, starting in May. Those with capital amounting to £SO will receive passages at £5 each. Agricultural labourers and families will be brought out free. Cane growers and farmers are applying for labourers, and will have to pay the Labour Bureau £5 apiece. As this brings the men within the scope of contract labour correspondence is passing bHwecn tho Government and Mr D ak'u on the point. The latter is guard d in his reply, and hopes to meet the wishes of Queensland,

Five labour members of the Federal Parliament waited on Mr Deakin and protested against any more permits being issued to European labourers for Queensland. There was plenty of white labour now available. Mr Deakin replied that be would not issue any more permits till he saw how MrKidston’s immigration scheme progressed.
