The Bakers’ CoUft ence resumed this morning, delegate ifing present from Auckland to Dunedin. A good deal of discussion took place on the question of fines for light weight bread. The Conference ultimately adopted as the standard weight- for weighing in ordinary dough 21bs 3ozs, and 41b 6ozs for the two and four . pound loaf respectively, tin dough 21bs 4ozs and 41b Boz. It is said that if a baker can prove that ho has weighed into tho oyen at those weights, no line can bo imposed for short weight. The matter of employees smoking in the baka-houso and on the delivery cart was discussed, and it was decided to ask the Minister for Health to insert a clause in tho Puro Foods Bil l prohibiting this. It was reported that £i»ll tho insurance companies declined to accept risks covering a master baker from loss in the case of dishonesty of men on delivery carts. Concerning the practice of undercutters mi tho trade, condemnatory remarks were made, and it was agreed that a strong endeavour should bo made to persuade non-unionists to no longer stand out. Tho apprenticeship question is now being discussed. Mr Dustin (Wanganui) suggested that if they cannot get baking taught in the technical schools prizes should be offered for essays on subjects such as fermentation, etc.
