WORKERS’ HOMES.

An Auckland Scheme. Press Association. Auckland, February 15. At the City Council meeting last night the Mayor submitted, a lengthy report on a scheme for the housing of workers in proximity to tho city. He favoured a scheme involving wholly Municipal capital and expenditure, and the erection of houses of brick, i estimated to cost ;£430 for four-roomed cottages and TISO for five-roomed cottages, inclusive of the cost of land. Tho cottages will be rented, tho former at 9s to 10s and the latter at IDs to 11s. Ho recommended that in tiro first instance £20,000 should be borrowed, which would enable nt least 40 houses to be erected. The Council resolved on the scheme with a view to obviating e anger of tho growth of slums in Auckland and providing suitable dwellings for a secdon of tho community whose wants are not supplied in any other way. The scheme brought forvvord by the Mayor is to be referred to the Finance Committee for their consideration and report.
