TAIHAPE NOTES.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)

- The Resident Magistrate paid ins monthly visit to Taihapo to-day (Wednesday) and sat for the first time in our new Courthouse, which he opened without ceremony. There were present a full tabid of legal gentlemen, both our local solicitors, Mr Arrowsmith and Mr Emerson (who represents Messrs Fullerton-Smith and Miles), and the visitors were Mr Inncs, from Palmerston North, and Mr Meldrum, from Hunterville. Mr Arrowsmith, in a few short words, congratulated his Worship on now having a respectable building in which to conduct the business of the Court, and his Worship just as briefly replied, and called on the first case—a debt case. I think that Taihapo residents residents should bo thankful for the improvement, but certainly hope they will all bo satisfied with an “ outside view” of the building. There were no police oases, not even “a sly grog case,” with its usual array cf exhibits of whisky bottles and demijohns.' There was a small list of debt cases, which were put through in quick time. The commission case, Carthew against Collins, referred to a sale or deal in land. The agent had a large place for sale for eash, or was willing to take a smaller place in part payment, and an arrangement was made whereby Mr Collins bought the larger place, the seller agreeing to take Mr Collins place as part payment in the deal. The agent, Carthew, claims commission on the sale of both places. E vidence was given for tlie plaintiff oy liiniSGlt and Mr Riddell, the owner of the larger property, and Mr Reid, a Wanganui agent. Mr Meld rum appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Innes for the defendant. Judgment was reserved till nest Court day. Our long spell of dry weather has by appearances come to an end, and i there are very few who would not welcome 48 hours’ rain. ■’ Building operations are still fairly in The town and district.
