Per Press Association.— Copyright. Ottawa, February 18. Colonel Hughes moved a resolution in the Dominion House of Commons advocating a full partnership and union between Britain and the Colonies. He favoured one Imperial Parliament with representatives from every part of the Empire, while British and Colonial Parliaments should continue to deal with Home 1 affairs. Sir W. Laurier said legislative independence had proved the closest bond of union between the Motherj land and the Colonies. There could I be no grand Imperial union except with absolute freetrade between the | component States. Canada had no j grievance regarding her relation with I the Motherland, t Mr Borden said that it was not | necessary that Imperial federation I should bo based on Imperial free- ! trade. Many thought that the Empire would he hound closer by preference. He believed closer relations would be secured by the process of growth and development. Colonel Hughes withdrew his motion, Mr Feilding proposes 120 fresh changes in the Canadian tariff, including several in the iron and steel schedules benefiting British producers.
