WANGANUI PRESBYTERY.
This Presbytery met at Marten on Tuesday for ordinary business. Present—Revs. A. Morton (Moderator), 1. Jolly, B. Hutson, D. Gordon, J. Ross, B. M. Eyburn, J. B. Hall, G. Budd, A. Doull and E. McCully, and Messrs A. Honore, W. Fleming, T. C. Brash, J. Frasers J. C. Brechin and J. Mcßeth (ciders.) Rev. R. McLean, Messrs McLean, Crockett and J. MacGregor, Home Missionaries, were also present. Commissions vrere received and sustained in favor of Messrs J. Meßcth, J. H. Murray, A. Honore and J. Fraser, Apologies for absence were received and sustained from Messrs E. K. Simpson, J. H. Murray and A. G. Simpson. The Moderator expressed the gratification of the Presbytery at the satisfactory state of the health of Rev. J. Doull, who was present.
The various reports from mission stations were considered and all indicated good progress. It was reported that the new Church at Castlecliff has been opened some weeks.
Mr D. McKenzie,. who left Mangaweka a short time ago, has taken up the Raetihi district, where he is working with characteristic vigor, and finding much encouragement. The motion expressing appreciation of Mr McKenzie’s work.
Mr Lennox was appointed to begin work amongst the workers on the Main Trunk line, a step that has been in contemplation for some months.
Rev. R. McClean, who has been at Halcombe for about three years, is leaving to take up the Pongaroa district, near Pahiatua. An agent will be appointed to take his place at Halcombe. Mr George K. Aitkeu was appointed to Foxton district.
Mr Ross reported that handsome gifts of timber had been received towards building Taihapo Mause, and it was expected the building would be completed in May. Mr Fleming resigned Taihape, to the regret of both the people and Presbytery. The following motion was placed on the records ;—ln accepting the resignation of Mr Fleming from Taihape the Presbytery puts on record its sense of the satisfactory work he has done in building up the church in a scattered and peculiarly difficult field for over three years, the zeal and fidelity with which he has discharged his duties and borne tbe strain of his work and their high appreciation of his efficient service to the whole church. The Presbytery prays that in God’s good providence a sphere of work worthy of Mr Fleming may soon be opened up. The appointment of a successor to Mr Fleming was left in the hands of the Moderator and Rev. J. Ross.
The Presbytery considered the remit of the General Assembly regarding the duties of the Editor and Publications Committee who manage the Outlook, and approved of most of the proposed regulations. Commissioners were appointed to carry out the work of Presbyterial visitation in Mavton, Huntcrville, Mangaweka, Eewa, Taihape and Halcombe congregations. At nest meeting, which will be on the second Tuesday of April, the Presbytery will consider important proposals regarding the youth of the church and also the regulations of the Beneficiary Funds and proposals to amalgamate the northern and southern funds.
The Presbytery met as Maori Mission Committee when, among other reports the gratifying fact was stated that the Maori Girls’ School at Turaiina is likely to Hare a number in attendance this year much in excess of last.
