BUCK-JUMPING.
There was a;large attendance of the public at the Australian Buck-jump-ing Exhibition given at Marton last evening. A novel entertainment was provided and considerable interest was taken in the performance. The riders represent the pick of Australian horsemen and their success last evening won hearty applause. The horses included the well-known “Hastings Bob ” and “Acrobat,”and the successful rider of these two famous buckjumpers was offered £2 if he could keep in the saddle for a minute. This was attempted by several well-known riders in Eangitikei, but they failed to earn the stake, although a very fair exhibition of horsemanship was given. The Australians mounted several local buck-jumpers and handled them most successfully, The riding of the bullocks proved a great attraction. They have only been once successfully ridden. Many unsuccessful attempts were made last night, but just before the close of the performance a man named J. Howard stepped into the ring and proved successful. He was loudly cheered and rewarded with a cash prize. To-morrow night another exhibition will be given, when two thoroughbred horses belonging to Messrs Sutherland and Green, which are described as being absolutely unrideable, will be ridden by the company’s riders. Other horses of bad character are promised, and the exhibition is sure to prove very attractive.
