FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held last evening. Present —Mr J. B. Trewin (in tho chair), Crs Thompson, Fitzhcrbert, Burne, West, and Richmond. Inward c orresponence was read as follows .-—
From Abattoir Inspector reporting that daring the month ot January there, were slaughtered—ll-3 cows, 25 bullocks, 4 calves, 373 sheep, 137 lambs, and 48 pigs. Those condemned consisted of 5 cows, 2 sheep, and 2 pigs. The Mayor remarked on the large proportion of ccw» that were slaughtered. REPORTS. Tho Overseer in his report stated that all watercourses in the borough had been cleaned out, and that asphalting would be commenced nest week. He recommended that a notice should bo posted on each bridge within tfcc borough stating weight same would carry. The Sanitary Inspector in his report advised that some efforts should be made to induce property owners to connect with the drainage system. The connection work done at tho Post Office under the superintendence of a Public W orks officer he said was a caricature on the system and entirely defective.
A petition was received from residents in North road for extension of sewerago system to their residences. The Mayor said that the Council was paying annually a sum of .£l3O, to night-soil man, and possibly for that sum capitalised the sowers could bo extended in the area included in North, South, East and AVest streets. Ho suggested the engineer be asked to report cost of same, with a view to raising a loan for the purpose. A majority of the Councillors, however, did not concur with his suggestion. It was resolved to reply to petitioners, that as their request meant raising a new loan, the Council could not undertake to do the work.
It was decided to ask Mrs Sherwill at what price she would sell necessary land for widening Macarthur-street, and Mr D. P. Barrett his price for that required for widening South-street at its junction with Awahuri road.
On the question of purchase of gas plant for the town, the Mayor said ho bad beon told by an engineer that bo had recently put down a plant, with four miles of mains, at a cost of JtTOOO. At present the plant laid was for a population of 2000, but it was suitable to increasing for one of 10,000. It was resolved, in the meantime, to accept oiler of Electrical Engineering Co., of Dunedin, to send up their engineer to report on a proposal for lighting Feilding borough with electricity. It was resolved that the engineer be requested to submit to the next meeting plana for surface drainage. It was resolved that the Council support the Foston Council in the lattor’s efforts to urge the Minister of Railways to provide accommodation at Foxton.
