FATAL COACH ACCIDENT.

Information was received hero to-night that the coach from Otjra to Springfield, on tho West Coast route, was capsized in the Orim Gorge to-day. A five months’ old child was killed and its mother, Mrs Scott, Ctroymouth, severely injured. I'hrce others women and two men were also injured. Tho body of the child and Mrs Scott were taken back to Greymouth, but the other injured passengers were brought on to the Healey, and will reach Christchurch at 1 in the morning. Gketmoctu, February 4. Miss Kellar, one o£ the passengers, on being interviewed, stated that the passengers were :—Mr, Mrs and Miss Condon, Miss Mnssen, Miss Sohaef and child, Mr Meyers, Mrs Scott and child. Miss Kellar, Mr Davis, and Mr and Mrs Homer. Tho passengers had just taken their seeds on the coach after climbing tho Otira Gorge, when the coach started down hill, They rounded tho first turn safely, but at tho second the king-bolt broke and tho coach capsized. The horses wore going very fast. All the passengers were thrown out of the coach except Mrs Scott, who clung to the coach and held her child; she got caught and was dragged fully 200 yards, the child getting the back of its head knocked in. Mrs Scott was badly injured internally. The coach broke right in half and the horses bolted with part of tho coach. The driver, S. Eastgato, escaped without injury. Tho passengers were more or less bruised, but not seriously, and were able to proceed on their journey. Mrs Scott and tho little dead child were conveyed from tho station to Mrs Kellar’s in a stretcher. An inquest will bo held today. '
