Press Association. Wellington, January 22. Fine weather was experienced for the first day of the summer meeting. There was a largo attendance, estimated at 9000. The sum of £25,255 (including £2411 through the double tote.) was handled for the day in the totalisator, as against £23,729 for the first day of last year. This is a record for one day at Wellington races. The results were as follows: — Trentham Hack Hurdles. —Lavinia 1, Lull 2. Maui 3. Also ran : Pawa. Lull was favourite. Lavinia led all the way and won in a canter. Time, 3min 21sec. Div., £6 18s. Anniversary Handicap.—Blythomaid 1, Exmoor 2, Royal Blue 3. Other starters were: Grand Slam, Wirral, Rifiemaid, Aldus, De Witte, Arclight, and Dulcinea. After Dulcinea delayed the start through fractiousnoes she was practically left at the post. Biythemaid and Do W r itto led to tho home turn into the straight, when the former drew out and won easily by four lengths. Time, Imm 4 2-ssecs Divs., £8 and £3 7s. Ruapehu Hack Handicap.—Tupono 1, Mahutu 2, Sea King 3. Seventeen started, those scrotched being Golden Cairn, William, Barley, Wairarapa, Hiro, and Pluck, A good race; won by a length. Achilles, tho favourite, wag first away, and, with Eden, led to the top turn, when Zimmerman challenged them, hut he soon fell out of the struggle. Then Apa came up on the inside, but Achilles never left the race in doubt, and won comfortably by a length, Eden a length and a half behind Apa. Time, 2min 35sco. Divs., £2 2s 1 each. Telegraph Handicap.—Munjcet 1, Probable 2, Signalman 3. Also ran : King Billy, Pink ’Un, Delamore, Sir Tristram, and Fontenoy. Munject, who was aho favourite, got a break on at the start, and never gave anything else a chance, evontu- ■ ally winning by a length and a half. Time, Imin l-isec. Nursery Handicap.—Elevation 1, Quidwife 2, Gold Crest 3. Also ran : Finery, Pearl Eoef, Lamsdorlf, English Eose, Ecmark, Takiri, Prism and Vasa. 'Won after a good race by a head, the same between second and third. Time, 49 3-ssoc. Divs, X 6 Is and XI 3s. Electric Handicap—Golden Gate 1, Ballarat 2, Golden Caim 3. Also ran : Eeplete, Petticoat, and Kurawaka. A good race, won by a length and a quarter. Time, Imin 2 2-ssccs. Divs., X 3 10s and 14s.
