SPORTING.

Foxton Races.

The first day of the always popular annual fixture of the Foxton Boeing Club was held yesterday. Weather conditions were simply perfect—a cloudless sky with a delightful breeze. The racing throughout was moat interesting, several finishes being exceedingly close, reflecting credit 'on the weight adjuster, Mr J. B. Henrys. The Cup field consisted of six starters, of which the public installed Nova, in Tilley’s Fordoll stable, a firm favourite. Ho only suffered defeat by a neck in the last strides, the Gisborne-owned Montigo showing a great turn of foot at the right end. Another slashing finish took place in the Trial Hack, which was contested by the good field of It, the favourite prevailing by a bare neck. A hot favourite in Sen Sim was put down emphatically in the Hack Hurdles by the Foildiug trained Peruvian. The well-bred Millenial made a runaway race of the Hack Welter, nothing having a chance with the Apremont mare. Perhaps the most exciting finish took place in the last event, the Herrington Welter, Eookby and Eosegrove being locked together for the last chain, the former winning by a short neck. First-class dispatches in every instance were effected by Mr T. Cameron, who was in his best form. The catering in the hands of Messrs Langley Bros., of Foxton, and the licensed booth conducted by Mr W. Devine, of the Empire Hotel, Palmerston, both gave the utmost satisfaction to patrons. The meeting was got off without a single

hitch of any kind, and Mr Angus Keith, the Club’s courteous secretary, and the other officials are to bo congratulated upon the smoothness with which the day’s sport was conducted. The sum of X 7170 was put through the machine. 1 Appended are the results : Electric Hack Handicap, of 80 sovs ; 6 furlongs. 138 Mr W. Stone’s Merriwing, Morriwoe—Fleotwing, 8.0 (D. Kemp) 1 18 Mr W. Trask’s Chattel, 0.7 (K, Murfitt) ... ... - 47 Mr D. Cameron), 70 Kai Errin 7.4 (McKay), 11 Frankland 0.7 (lOlbs overweight) (A. Olliver), 21 Eoviollo 0.7 (Ayres). Chattel delayed the start somewhat by getting rid of his rider under the trees and then clearing out. Merriwing and llangipapa were anxious to get away well. When the tapes were released Sedgemoor was quickest to move but was soon deposed by Chattel, who showed the way round the bend with Rangipapa and Merriwing her nearest attendants. Turning into the home run Chattel was still in front. Kemp, however, shook Merriwing up, and after a leally good finish got up and won by a short half length. Time liuin. 18 3-osccs. Dividends, Merriwing £4 Bs, Chattel £ll 7s. Total on machine, £909. Red Shank and Pat out out the running, leading over fence opposite stand, where Pat came down and Awapuni stumbled, both losing their riders. Maidi led down the back with Cavalcade next. The former came right away in straight, winning very easily. Time, 3min. 3-osec. Dividends, £2 Is and 13s. Totalisator, £675.

Foxton Cup, of 120 sovs., 1] miles. 178 Mr H. Denton’s Montigo, by Strowan —Immensikoff, 8.1 (D. (Kemp) 1 301 Mr A. Sand’s Nova, 8.1 (W. Price) 2 210 Mr T. B. Lambert’s Makikihi, 8.0 (A. From a good start Nova and Eoseal showed out in front, and passing the stand they held a length’s lead of the other four all abreast. At the six furlong post Eoseal was a length out in front of Nova and Makikihi, with Whakawehi next. Three furlongs from home Nova shot out clear of a fairly bunched field with exception of Montigo. The last named however moved rip fast on the bend and at the home turn was within striking distance. Nova and Makikihi were almost abreast entering the straight, the former drawing away and looking all over a winner when Kemp brought Montigo up with a rush and snatched a victory from the favourite by narrow margin of a neck. Time, 2min 14 2-sseo. Divs., XI Cs and IGs. Totalisator, .£ll3l. Tbiau Hack, of GO sovs ; 1 milo. 289 Mr L. Pascall’s Pliugot, Musketry —Lady Isabel, 8.1 (A. Ollirer) ... 1 90 Mr H. Kayncr). 10 Tawhera 8.1 (Jackson), 11 Iceland 8.1 (Horne). The starter after some little trouble dispatched the big field very evenly. Robin Link made nearly all the running. At the home bend Lingerer moved up and half way down the straight had a bit the best of it from Robin Link with the favourite, Flingot, handy. A chain from the post Lingerer looked to have the race won, but Flingot got up in the last stride and won by a short neck, Robin Link a length away third. Time, Imin 48secs. Divs., £2 6s and £2 6s.
