The Laura, which sailed for Kaipara on Wednesday, encountered very bad weather on Wednesday night, and on Thursday sprang a leak, and returned to port for repairs. Melbourne, January 19. Dairymen tendered a social to Mr Sawers, Government cheese expert. The Minister of Agriculture referred to the kindness and courtesy of the New Zealand Government in sending Mr Sawers to judge the exhibits of cheese at the Exhibition, Mr Holmes responded on behalf of the visitors. He thanked the Government for the hospitality extended to Mr Sawers. London, January 20. A Court inquiry censured Gourlay, railway driver in the recent accident, for not following definite precautions, and the stationmaster at Elliot Junction was censured for not using fog signals. Brisbane, January 21. The Airlie has been refloated. A brief wire has been received by the postmaster at Palmerville from the postmaster at Cooktown announcing that the latter town has been laid in ruins by a hurricane. Numerous accidents are reported but no fatalities.
