Although the drought did not disastrously affect the crops in Southland, where oats arc really good, turnips above the average and potatoes excellent, the shower of mild warm rain to-day was welcomed all over the district and should ensure an abundant harvest. Wellington, January 15 Bain fell steadily in the city all day to-day, but ceased in the evening. The downfall has been welcome in the suburbs, where the shortage of water was very pronounced. Auckland, January 16. Baeroa reports that the Waihau river is the highest seen for twenty years. Communication is stopped on the main roads to Opiui through damaged bridges. Eailway traffic in both directions is stopped. The Piako bridge near Morrinsvillo twisted. It is expected it will take three weeks to effect repairs. Waiiii, January 16. Mr Devoroll, who carries mails to Tauranga, had a terrible' experience on returning from Tauranga yesterday. He was crossing a road on horseback with the mails, the road being coveted to a depth of six feet by a rushing flood of water. When half-way across the horse was carried away and the'maiis washed out to sea. Deveroll clung to a barbed wire fence and crept along it, reaching dry land in an exhausted condition with lacerated hands.
