Owing to the shortage of water some Dunedin foundries had to discontinue work this morning. Christchurch, January 12.

Harvest and pastoral report* from North and Mid Canterbury are not bright. Crops are likely to be very light and pastures arc far from satisfactory, but rain fell for two hours on Thursday night and again early this nlorning. The sky was clear at 9 o’clock, but is overcast again. Wa.ip.uva, January 12. After a long spell of exceptionally hot weather rain has been falling steadily from before daylight and promises to continue. Napier, January 12. The exceptionally heavy downpour of rain last night will do an immense amount of good. Visitors to the back country report that the need for rain is greatly felt, and in some districts house supplies have to be carted long distances. Masterton, Janury 12. A thunderstorm broke over this district yesterday afternoon accompanied by hsil and rain. This is the first fall recorded for over four weeks. Sixty-three points were registered. The sky is overcast to-day, and it is raining heavily, with every indication of the prolonged drought having finally broken. Invercargill, January 12. A heavy thunderstorm|passed over the Lake District on Thursday afternoon accompanied by torrential rains. Creeks previously dry between Kingston and Lnmsden were running bank high on Friday. The crops look well in most parts, but the rain is badly needed in the lower country. Wellington', January 12. A pleasant break in the long spell of dry weather was experienced this morning, when heavy rain foil for about an hour. The weather, however, cleared, and the heat wave still continues.
