Farrar, in tho course of a speech at Baksburg, warned the Transvaal that the highest financial authorities of the Continent declared that if the labour supply for the Rand was tampered with they would not siijk another penny in mines, and would remove what capital they have already invested. As natives worked only six months out of twenty-four months 140,000 would be required to replace Hie 60,000 Chinese labourers now on the Rand. He anticipated an increase in labour saving apparatus in i mines. Sir G- H. Farrar advocated the re-enactment of tho labour inp porfcation ordinance until adequate native labour was available. He admitted that the Progressives intended to seek a revision of the Constitution until the political status of the Trans*vaal was like that of Australia.
January 7, The steamer Oranley brought 2129 coolies to Durban, though early in December Mr Churchill stated there were only 1000 aboard, completing the number for whom licenses had been issued.
