AMERICAN RAILWAYS.
Per Press Association.—Copyright. New York, January 7. Tho inter-Statb Commerce Com.mission, in the course of an inquiry at New York into railway matters, elicited that tho unlimited powers of E, H. Hardman, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Northern Securities Company, enabled him to purchase £20,000,000 stock of other railways, and that he used the enormous funds of the Company as he liked.
The same Commission, in its enquiries at Washington as to railway disasters, obtained evidence which showed inefficient management and recklessness on the part of employees. One witness worked sixty hours with eight hours sleep. Oases in which men had worked twenty-four hours continuously were not uncommon. Congress will limit the hours of continuous labour to sixteen.
