Police Torture.
Per Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. St. Petersburg, January 3. Nicholas Schmidt, owner of an art furniture factory at Moscow, is undergoing trial for conspiracy against the Czar. The prosecution is based on a confession made after police torture and enforced sleeplessness for|a week, which was subsequently retracted. London, January 3. Reuter reports that General "Vonderlaunity, prefect of St. Petersburg, has been assassinated. Another report states that he was shot dead during' the consecration of a new building.
