PROPOSED BOROUGH FOR PAPAKURA.

DEFERRED FOR THE PRESENT. For some time past the advisability ’of forming the Papakura town district into a borough has engaged the attention of several members of the Town Board. At a previous meeting of the Board it was decided to take a census of the district for the purpose of ascertaining the population, but the matter of appointing a r presentative to take the census was deferred. At last night’s meeting, Mr Rea moved, and Mr Beams seconded,

that Mr. C Jephson be appointed. While all members thought it would be a good idea to have a census taken, Messrs. McLennan. Campbell and Montgomery contended that in view of the present financial position of the Board, it could not afford to pay a man to do’the work. Titov also maintained that as the Board had considerable works in hand, the tone was inopportune to take steps 10 hate a borough formed until such time as the works were completed. Mr. Rea strongly urged that steps be taken to have 'a borough formed, pointing out that if the Board did not take action other people would. The chairman mentioned that the position would be put before the ratepayers at a later dale. Mr Rea said if the matter was put before the ratepayers ihe Board should be prepared to answer the question if the population was large enough to warrant the formation oi a borough, and the only wa\ it could be correctly answered was by means of a census of the district. The motion was lost, the voting being:—For: Messrs. Rea, Beams and Jones. Against: The Chairman and Messrs McLennan, Campbell and Montgomery. Mr. McLennan gave notice to move at next, meeting that the motion authorising the taking of a census be rescinded,
