CORRESPONDENCE.
(We do not hold ourselves respon-| sible for, or identify ourselves with) opinions expressed in this column,: but at the same time it is open to all to use within reason.) (To the Editor). PUKEKOHE IMPROVEMENTS. Sir, — As a frequent visitor to Pukekohe from a neighbouring district, may I congratulate you on your timely advo'cacy of a number of 'improvements,, all: of which appesw to be desirable, and most of them urgently required. A Beautifying Socj'oty. would be a distinct acquisition to the community and would provide scope for taste and enthusiastic effort in makng the town, and particularly its approaches from the eastern end more attractive. Another worthy suggestion, and one wipeh some of us residing in adjacent districts equally appreciate, is that relating to the formation of an Orphans’ Glut or some such social society. Now. sir, if you had a closer acquaintance with Pukckohe, you irAglit hesitate tf propose anything of an cducationa' character. A predecessor of yours ir the editorial chair made a very strong appeal on behalf of a Literary am Debating Society—which one wouh expect to bo recognised as a claimant need in a progressive community—and behold, not an ounce of support did he .receive. The article referret -to made a trenchant criticism o J 1 those professional leaders in tin ! ir.qral- and social and intellectual lift of the district who in this respect had failed in the past. And would you believe it, so astounding is the apathy in these local folk, "that no one turned a h pfy, or made the least effort to discuss even, let alone put the excellent proposal into action. It is difficult to understand why Pukckohe lays behind other towns, even of lesser size, as far as .Interest in the social culture of her citizens is concerned. Probably ft is due moire thar anything else to the lack of leadership. I trust, sir, your suggestions may not fall on deaf ears, and that we will see some needful innovations initiated before many months pass.— I am, etc., WAKE UP PUKEKOHE.
