ENTERTAINMENTS.
STRAND. | TO-NIGHT (TUESDAY). j It is a long time since such a i splendid story was interpreted on the screen by such an excellent! cast as that in " Maggie Pepper" \ featuring the beautiful movie star, Ethel Clayton. The picture depicts the struggles of the: clever " Maggie " against heavy ■ odds, enemies and adverse cir- I cumsfcances. The big human j note is uppermost. Ethel Clay- j ton as " Maggie "is superb. She ' has the peculiar quality of alert- \ ness and activity as well as the charm and culture to make the role one that will not be soon forgotten. The production is well' above the average in every way. j Supports include " Lightning" Raider" No. 6 and a two-part Mark Sennett Comedy entitled " No Mother to Guide Him.'' THURSDAY, JANUARY 20th. On-on-on-and amid the rattle and roar of galloping, trampling hoofs, Martindale, millionaire, and now jockey through sheer desperation, urged the mare upon which he'd staked so much to win for him fortune and the girl he loved. The winning post loomed ahead. His spurs.sank deeply into " Vendetta's " sides, his whip beat a tattoo on her foaming flanks —when from the cloud of dust came the sharp ping of a pistol shot, ho felt a stab of pain, and then through the naze, as he was falling he heard" She's beaten —Vendetta's done for." But was she? Gerald Ames and Violet Hopson in " A Fortune at Stake," Nat Gould's famous racing story. " A Fortune at Stake " is an AllBritish production. It represents the true British instinct for sport and fair play and it not only rivals " The Whip " it surpasses it, Also good supports and fifth episode of " The Vanishing Dagger." FRIDAY NEXT.
DAD HAYSEEDS AT THE MELBOURNE CUP." On Friday next at the Strand Theatre an exceptionally interesting picture entitled " Dad Hayseeds' at the Melbourne Cup" will be unspooled. Don't fail to see this. ODDFELLOWS' HALL PICTURES. "THE BLIFDNESS OF DIVORCE." "Easy divorce is a bane to any* nation, a curse to society, and a menace to the home," declared ex-President Theodore Roosevelt, in discussing the divorce evil, which is so" graphically shown in "The Blindness of Divorce," to be exhibited at the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday, January 22nd. "The Blindness of Hivorco" is a William FaS? picturisation of social conditions of to-day, directed by that cinema genius Frank Lloyd, who made "Les Miserables," "A Tale of Two Cities," and "When a Man Sees Red," a trio of masterpieces. Whatever may be your pre-conceived ideas of divorce, this realistic photo-drama will give new conceptions of its horrors and undoubtedly make a convert of you to the theories of former President Roosevelt. In "The Blindness of Divorce," the wife, though guiltless of wrong, is ostracised by society and driven to the depths, through no fault of her own. Had divorce in this case not been made so easy, a word of explanation would have saved untold misery and unhappiness. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26th.
. A FAMOUS PRODUCTION. The great photo-play, "Sporting Life," produced by Maurice Tourneur, which will be shown at the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday, January 26fch, is a Para-mount-Arte raft masterpiece. It is an adaptation of the famous Drary Lane melodrama, and there is not a dull moment from start to finish. The scenes of the prize fight in the National Sporting Club, of London, and the Derhy, are full of intense excitement. The big fight is one of the thrilling events ever pieturised.
