CHAUTAUQUA.
PUKEKOHE SEASON, JANUARY 14—20. The educational and entertainment movement known as Chautauqua was a pronounced success when it visited Pukekohe last year. Due to the pub-lic-spirited citizens who have again
acted as guarantors, Chautauqua will bo here from January 14th to the 20th. To those who attended these brilliant lectures and the. delightful entertainments last year no urging is necessary to get them to repeat their visit, hut to those who held it is urged that in the spirit of broadmindedness and fairness they should attend one afternoon or evening before they condemn. Chautauqua is unique in that it gathers men and women of international fame in the lecturing field and on the concert platform, and presents a very unusual and very charming combination of entertainment and lecture • to the general -public. The very basis of Chautauqua is that its gatherings inspire and inculcate a patriotism to one’s own town and to one's own nation. Even the children arc taught in an entertaining manner the principles of citizenship which wilt stand them in good stead as they grow older. Chautauqua makes for toleri ance, for a better understanding, as
between nations, and therein lies its so-calledl “uplift.” Though its origin is American, its constitution is now international, and beyond its name it has lost its Americanism. The Chautauqua which will visit l.’ukckohe on the 14th of this month is backed by Now Zealanders, arranged by a Council of New Zealanders, and has chosen its lecturers and entertainers from Canada, Scotland, Syria, America, and clscwhme. The attendances at Pukekohe should constitute a record this year, as_ seldom if ever does such an organisation give the small towns of the Dominion an opportunity to hear such a, galaxy of talent.
