PAERATA. Paerata celebrated the advent of another year by a dance in the floods Shed. The shed had been tastefully decorated with flags and ferns, and a happy company enjoyed the dancing until well into the year nifieteen twentyone. TUAK'AU. The usual monthly meeting of the Tuak.au Town 'Board will be held on Tuesday, January 11th. DEATH OF MRS MARY E. DEAN. The death took place at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland, on December 24th, of Mrs Mary Dean, wife of MiGeorge Dean, of Paeroa, DeCeased, who was widely known and highly esteemed, was the eldest daughter of Mr John Poladd, of Tuakau, and sister of Mr Hugh Poland, member lor Ohinemuri. The funeral took place at Paeroa on December 26th, and was very largely attended.
ORTON. CHILDREN'S 'XMAS TREE. A most pleasant day was spent at Orton on December 18th when a 'Xmas Tree Social was hold at Mr. J. Pollock's residence. The children from the Opuatia school and surrounding neighbourhood were invited -for the- day and were present in good numbers under the able care of the Schoolmaster, Mr. Reed. Mrs. J. Pollock, who was assisted by a number of willing helpers, had spared neither time nor effort lo vffiake the day a brilliant success, and their efforts were amply rewarded by the joy and merriment exhibited by all. Father 'Xmas, who had gained admittance to the house by unknown means, met the children in the hall and after a pleasant greeting to the little ones led the way to the 'Xmas tree. The tree itself evoked admiration from all. being artistically decorated and covered with presents and toys. Everyone received a present from the tree and soon the scene became a most merry one. After a little more friendly intercourse and posing for his photo. Father 'Xmas made his adieu. In the course of the day Mr. J. Pollock contributed a number of selections on the pipes, and games wero-played. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the host and hostess for the pleasant day which was suitably responded to, and the party broke up withTl* singing of " Auld Lang Syne."
OPUATIA. PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY. Another enjoyable day was .spent at the Opnatia on Tuesday, 21st December, whe/r the school broke up for the Summer vacation. A number of parents and friends met together to be entertained by the children aruJ to bid farewell to Mr. T. J. Reed, the relieving schoolmaster. Mr. Geraghtv occupied the chair. The school children rendered a number of songs and recitations which were much enjoyed by an appreciative audience. The prizes for the year's work were given out, the special ones being:— Best Attendance, (Girls) Emily 'Ross, (Boys) Ellington Ross; t Highest Efficiency, (Girls) Emily Ross, (Boys) David Wade and Ellington Ross. The school children presented Mr Reed with a 'Xmas card suitably inscribed as a token of their high esteem. The opportunity was also taken by the Sunday School scholars of presenting Mr. M. Forster with a safety-razor in recognition of his three" years' service as teacher. The day was closed by the singing of the National Anthem.
