In this year's competition the essay was entitled "Sports and Their Benefits " and was won as above stated. Puni school did not compete. the presentation and in so doing
he congratulated the committee on the success of the sports meeting and also the people in showing such a sporting spirit in keeping the sports going in spite of the three years of war. It spoke volumes for them in keeping the young people together on New Year's Day. The schools essay competition was a fine thing because it gave the pupils of the four schools something to look forward to annually. He then presented the shield to the headmaster of the Mauku School, Mr. Moore, and congratulated him on the success achieved. Mauku secured 39 marks out of a possible of GO, Waiau Pa 31, and Patumahoe 17/2. In addition to the shield the competitor from each school gaining highest marks received a handsome book. The result was;
Mauku School, Pansy Foster 7H points out of a possible of 10. Waiau School, Curler Torbett ij points. Patuniahoe School, Myrtle Woolscy 5 points. At the conclusion three hearty cheers wore given for Mr. Ivan Motion. Results of the weight-guessing competition will appear in a future issue.
