LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

W. G. has a good house cow

An agricultural and pastoral nsso ciation has been formed at Waiuku.

Vehicles plying for hire in the Manurewa Town District must be licensed.—See advt.

The annual sotial and dance in aid of the Puni Public Hall fund will be held on New Year's Eve. A further donation to the Pukekohe war memorial fund, a sum of two guineas, has been received from Mr. Cecil H. Mason, Nominations are called for candidates for membership on the Waikato River Board, an advertisement to this effect appearing in a non-local paper.

Following the procedure ci list year, the "Times,'-' like most provincial newspapers, will not be published during the Christmas-New Year week. The next issue will be on Tuesday, January 4. We are pleased to report that the little boy, Winston Melville, who was injured in the recent gig accident at Buckland, is progressing satisfactorily, and that no serious results are anticipated. A Christmas service will be conducted by the Rev. J. Olphert, in the Methodist Church on Saturday evening, at which a collection will be taken up in aid of the Methodist Orphanage in Auckland. The Pukckohc land agency, formerly trading under the style of "Civil i'.nd Roberts," has now been acquired by Mr. V. S. Roberts, on his own account, and will trade under the style of "The Premier Land, Estate, and Commission Agency. In an Auckland daily paper recently the name Frankton was given instead of Franklin. We have often noticed this error, which shows that the name Franklin is not very familiar outside. In fixing identity of location the name Pukekohe is at once informing, for its early potatoes and onions have made Pukekohe known from Auckland to the Bluff.

Last Saturday was a day of disaster for Mr. P. Herbert, who suffered the severe blow of losing: £530 at the Te Awamutu races. Mf. Herbert, foolishly, perhaps, carried this large sum of money on his person, and during a rush to the "tote," one of the light-fingered fraternity must have lifted it from his pocket. He had only received the money a week ago as the result of the sale of the Olympic skating rink to a Hamilton syndicate. The money consisted of a roll of notes, the numbers of which the loser took no cognisance.—Ngaruawahia Advocate. / The matter of establishing a cottage hospital.at Waiuku was considered by the "Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Tuesday evening. The chairman read a letter signed by the chairman of the Waiuku Town Board and the chairman of the Waiuku District Memorial Committee, guaranteeing £IOOO toward the cost of erecting the hospital. He added that he understood that the settlers at Waiuku would not limit their contribution to £IOOO, and it was very probable that it might be increased to £ISOO. Mr. J. D. Chalmers, the Franklin representative on the board, supported this view, and stated that the people were very anxious to have the hospital. It would avoid the present necessity of having to send minor cases to Auckland for treatment. It was resolved to refer the question to the Finance Committee for a report.
