CRIME IN PARIS.
A series of sensational crimes, ranging from robbery on a large bcale to brutal murder, occupies a considerable part of the French press, and there is evidence tending to prove that they are the work of organised bands of bandits. An inspector of Police of Paris, killed while tracking utomobile bandits, and a young actress, who was killed in a Marseilles hrt«l for her jewellery, are the latest vit tims, writes the Paris correspond•t of the Daily Chronicle. v The murder of the actress, Mile.. Yvonne Schmitt, was carried out in •licumstances which resemble a film Irama. Mile. Schmitt, who had been dancing at a music hall in the Mediterranean port for about a month, ceupied an apartment in a prominent hotel with a woman friend, Mme. Mi.rchland, who is reputed to be wealthy. She "made the acquaintance in a. pfc of two young men elegantly dressed and of exquisite manners, whom she invited to the apartment for supper. One of the men admired a pearl necklace which the actress wore, whereupon she invited him to inspect her collection of jewellery. n oved or uttered a cry. Mine. Marchland, ran from the room, and, openings window, called loudly for assistance. The two men dashed from the apartment and escaped. When the police arrived on the scene they found that Mile. Sehmitt had been strangled, and the iv.urderers had made off with her jewel ease, containing gems valued at £4OOO. A bag left behind by the men contained a full set of burglars' tools and false beards.
