DISTRICT NEWS.
PAPATOETOE. TOWN BOARD. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board was held on Tuesday evening last in the Papatoetoe Town Hall. Present: Mr. Hall (chairman), Messrs.- Smith, Watson, Timewell, McCullough, Death, Bryant. Mr. J. H. Hainsworth applied for a building permit.—Referred to building by-laws and matter referred to building inspector. In reply to an advertisement a tender was received' for clearing and fencing at recreation ground from Messrs. Henderson and Thompson. As Mr. Sutton is called upon to pay haif the cost of the fence on the party line, it was decided to consult him before deciding contract, and as tenderers are members of the board's staff, they are ineligible to do the work unless they resign from their present employment. There being only one price received, it was decided to see others who contemplated tendering. On the motion of Mr. Smith, a committee consisting of the chairman and Mr. McCullough was appointed to settle matter and have work done. ,A report was received from Mr. L. G. P. Spencer, the board's engineer, making recommendations for construction of a road in Orphan Home subdivision. It was decided that the board's conditions, which are similar to those imposed by the Manukau County Council, must be complied with, and that the footpaths be laid down 12ft. wide with a coating of metal or scoria 6ft. wide.—Left to board's engineer to see that the work is done satisfactorily, and the cost of inspection to be charged to the owners of the estate named.
A plan of the subdivision was submitted by Mr. Dawson, engineer for the subdivisions.
It was moved by Mr. Smith and carried that the filling across a gully be the full width of the road, and that the plan be submitted to the Town Board's engineer for a report. The engineer's report on Station Road improvements recommended that kerbing and channelling be carried out from post office to station approach, and footpath be coated with scoria—Referred to Works Committee to carry out the work when convenient.
The engineer was instructed to inspect road work at Cornwall Road to see that such has been carried out according to board's requirements. Accounts amounting to £69 4s were passed for payment. Mr. Death received a letter from a man in the King Country who is prepared to bring a stone-crusher to this district and take contracts for supplying metal to this and other local authorities.—The Engineer was requested to write for particulars. The chairman pointed out the danger to the . board's roads of having carts transporting metal thereon. Mr. Death reported that members of the Manurewa Town Board had approached him re securing a working plant together. Mr. McCullough thought it would be better to purchase or hire their own plant. The chairman said that when the borough is formed a complete plant should be secured. The grader is now being hired out at 3s 6d an hour, and other plant could be hired out or used profitably. The Orphanage Trust has offered a piece of land to the Board; and the clerk was instructed to write asking for an authoritative offer so that improvements may be proceeded with. Re. Borough proposal.—The chairman said the committee had met, and would report shortly.
