COURTHOUSE IN WOOD.
FURTHER PROTEST ENTERED.
It will be recollected that when the question of a new Courthouse for Pukekohe was under consideration some time ago the Mayor and others interested in the matter protested against the erection of the building in wood, and requested that the structure be erected in brick. Contrary to ' the protest and request, tenders were subsequently called for the erection of the building in wood. The Mayor, Mr. C. K. Lawrie, immediately communicated -with the Prime Minister, Right Hon. W. F. Massey, on the matter, again protesting against the building being erected in wood, pointing out it was against the interests of the town, as the locality was included in the brick area.
On Saturday last Mr. Lawrie received the following telegram from the Premier:—"Your telegram re new Courthouse received. T will immediately communicate with Minister of Justice on subject." —(Signed), W. F. Massev.
At the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce meeting last night the president (Mr. R. F. Webster) referred to the fact of the Government calling for tenders for a new Pukekohe Courthouse in wood. This policy was condemned by members, who strongly urged that the building should be in brick or stone. The president was deputed to write and wire to the Minister for-Justice and also to the Prime Minister on the matter.
