Mr. James Deerness Cfflmers, of Waiuku, was elected unopjbsed. I MAUKU CANDIDATES. f MR. £ C. CUFF. i > Mr. E. C. CJfff, who has been nom ir.ated as a representative for th> Mauku Ridingf of the Franklin County Council lhasjroeen a resident of the district for/the past 20 years. When Mr. Cuff t#ok up land in the Waiav district 29 years ago people generally callqjl it foolishness to attempt to farm such country, which at tha - ' time was a wilderness of fern and heather, and which was looked on as worthless. However, in a very few ' years, by dint of scientific treatment hard work and perseverance, Mr. Cuff transformed the once barren land into a smiling tract of greer. fields and golden crops, grazing" hundreds of fat sheep and contented cattle, and showing returns equal t< any other part of the district. Sub sequently, Mr. Cuff sold this block and took" up another nearer Paturnahoe, where similar results were obtained, and which property is now one of the most picturesque and profitable farms in the county. As i. ■ prospective councillor, Mr. Cufi (writes a "Times" contributor) h likely to apply the same diligence '. and careful administration to thi - county as has made him so successful in his own sphere. Being a lib- • eral, broadminded man, he will be ■ fair to all, and electors can be assured that he will carry out his dui ties in a faithful, non-partisan spirit. He has been prominently associated with all local matters for m-ny years, and as secretary of the local Patriotic Committee during the war period did a power of work and showed 1 some of the finest results ever obi tained in the district. He has also acted as secretary of the Patumahoe School Committee, been a prominent member of the Farmers' Union, and has always taken a keen and useful interest in the athletic, cricket and sports clubs. MR. HENRY DELL.

Another candidate in the lieid for the Mauku ridiifg is Mr. Henry Dell. one of the best-known residents in Franklin.

Mr. Dell, during practically the whole of his long career in the district, has been connected with public life in one form or another. Twenty years ago and more he was a prominent figure in military circles in the province, and in 1901' he was promoted from first-lieutenant to captain of the Pukekohe Mounted Rifles, for which troop he had done wonderfully good work. At the time of his taking charge the men were without uniform:; and the regimental account at the bank was very unsatisfactory indeed, but Mr. Dell, by careful management and diligence not only secured uniforms for every man, but also rehabilitated the regiment's finances. When the Boer War broke out he was sent to the Hamilton headquarters to swear-in re emits. '

But Mr. Dell's public life has been a varied one, and not confined by any means to a single sphere of activity. He was a member of the old Pukekohe Town Board for seven years, and served thereon l ight up until the formation of the borough. Here, as elsewhere, he earned a name for being a fearfess and outspoken critic, refusing to join this or that clique. Even" his opponents always paid him the compliment of saying .that they "knew exactly where Dell stood;" if he gave his word he would carry a thing through to the very end -bitter or sweet, as the case might be! He fought strenuously for kerbing and channelling of King Street, and the provision of up-to-date roads generally, even against strong conservative opposition. As a member of the local School Committee, Mr. Dell was foremost among those responsible for the removal of the school to its piesent site, over which there was a very big fight at the time.

As a business man of .'Jo years' sanding, it was natural that Mr. Dell should belong to the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce, of which he is and has been vice-president since its inception, with the exception of a term as president. He was also a member of the Licensing Board. • The residents of Mauku district know Mr. Dell very well, he having secured a farm of 1000 acres at Wai au Pa some ten years' ago, which he has worked ever since, and is now one of the leading breeders of Jersej stock in the district, and is milking and testing a large herd. He has also acted frequently as land valuer, his judgment being regarded as eminently sound.

With such a record behind him, Mr. Dell is obviously well qualified to become a councillor, in whiclj capacity his lon» and varied, experience, shrewd business knowledge, honest and fearless criticism and straight dealing would be decided assets to the county. j MR J. R. LOWRY'S CANDIDATURE. ! ADDRESS AT BOMBAY. Mr. J. R. Lowry, candidate for the Drury riding at the forthcoming county elections, addressed u meeting of ratepayers in the Bombay Hall on Thursday evening last. There was a iarge attendance, presided over by Rev. C. .11. Vaughan. The candidate, who received an attentive hearing, said he had had considerable experience on local bodies, and had been a member of the Raglan County Council for 16 vears. Twelve months ago, he mentioned that lie bad formulated a scheme for road metalling purposes, and. sue reeded in having a loan of X2l.OlM' ■ arried by a large majority. If elected for the Drury riding he vftmld give the present metalled roads and . bridges first consideration, aiul woulo' endeavour to have tjiem well maintained. devoting attention afterwards to the b,\ -roads. He advocated constructing roads with a good camber, and well rolled, with a grade of not

more ..-than 1 in 15. He also : dvoI gate# strongly the reduction of the [-cHgyffly overdraft, which at present -Was about £16,000, which meant that p£looo of the rates went to pay the interest thereon. A 25 per cent, reduction each year would soon put the county in a strohg financial position. Speaking on the rating system, he favoured the rating on the unimproved value, thus inducing a ratepayer to improve his property. At the conclusion of his address the candidate was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
