Thursday was the twenty-first anniversary of the departure of the first of the ten contingents that were despatched from New Zealand to take part in the South African war. The first contingent, which sailed J from Wellington in the steamer Wai- ; wera on October 21, 1899, consisted, of 220 officers and men, and wr.s commanded by Major (now Major-Gen-eral Sir Alfred) Robin. The total number of men in the ten contingents was about 6500, and the nljpber of deaths of New Zealanders in the war 232, of whom 139 died of disease.
