A man from the country was debating the butter question the other day with a group of workers, the latter unanimously charging the dairy farmer with piofiteerling if the price of batter exceeded 2s per lb. The latter contended that it was not a question of profiteering at all. It was a question of demand and competition in prices. He drew an imaginary line. On one side was England, offering the dairy farmer 2s 6d and 3s per lb. for his produce. On the other side was New Zealand offering Is 9d! Even the city worker saw the poin then. The man from the country pushed the comparison further. •'Here are you workers and your labour," he said. "Your wage is Is 9d per hour. A competitor comes along and offers you 2s Gd. Are you profiteering because you accept the highest price for your work ? In England the people are paying up to 5s per lb. for butter."
