PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.
¥he usual fortnightly meeting ■of the Papakura Town Board was held in the Board's office last evening, there being present: Messrs. Evans (chairman), E. D. MqLennon, J. ilea, I). W. Jones, Montgomery and Campbell. Housing Problem. A letter was received from the General Manager of the New Zealai/d Railways replying to the representations of the board for the erection of houses for members of the Department's staff. It was stated that provision had been made in the housing scheme for dwellings at Papakura for railway-employees; and that the work would be undertaken in accordance with the building programme which is now proceeding on systematic lines. Attention was first being given to those localities where dwellings were most urgently required, and the needs of Papakura would be dealt with in due course. It was resolved that the letter be acknowledged, and appreciation be expressed at the forward step being taken by the Department. vV
Straying Cattle.
A complaint was receive'd from a, ratepayer regarding the number of cattle straying on the roads. Members of the bo;trd agreed that it was time something was clone in this respect. It was stated that there was a ranger employed by the board, but dissatisfaction was expressed at the incomplete manner in which he attended to the matter. Mr. MeLennon moved Unit the present ranger be notified thai his would not be further .required, and .1 new ranger be engaged. The motion was seconded and carried .unanimously. The managing-director of the Hunuii Colliery, Ltd., wrote informing the boaul that they were not carting over two ton loads from their mine. The letter also cailed attention to the bad condition of. the roads in the district, and suggested that in view of liie fact that the developments in the mine in the future and the consequent benefit to the district. "Sfye board should make provision for improvements to the roads. The letter was received. The Metal Question.
In connexion with the obtaining of metal supplies, Mr. Jones reported that in conjunction 'with a representative of the Franklin County Council he viewed the latter's quarries. He stated that the council w«s quite agreeable to permit the board to odtain supplies from this quarry. Mr. Jones said he understood that arrangements could be made with a contractor to quarry, crush and cart the metal. Messis. Campbell and McLennnn spoke in favou» of the quality of the metal, and other members igreed that the board should avail itself of this opportunity. It was suggested that the qmrry should be worked on a comparatively * large scale. It was resolved, after a great deal of discussion, that the contractor be communicated with to ascertain if he would undertake the work. In view of the possibility of the board obtaining its own metal supply, tenders for loading and metalling be held in abevance until fin-
ality was reached regarding the quarry. , It was derided that the Franklin County Council be granted the use of the board's otiicc at a polling booth for the county election.
