PUKEKOHE BOWLING CLUB.
SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON'. Bowlers and their friends from all over the district, including repre-cn tatives from Waiuku and l)evonp'<rt. assembled at the Pukekohe Bow.ing Club's green on Saturday for the <>t ficial opening of the bowling -c. -•>> locally. In all there was an ajlt"i'ciance of about So bowlers, and about 70 onlookers. The grounds Tr.nl beei artistically decorated with burning for the occasion, and this, toge'J.e. with the trees and shrubs which vvm beautifully green, presented a brilliant spectacle. The bowling green itself was in splendid order, thanks to the eft'o; L of the superintendent (Mr. 'Robert Fitness), tlr- deputy-superintendent (Mr. J. H. Waters),- and caret:-kei (Mr. Holloway), all of whom sparco no pains in getting the bowling arena in playing order. For this Unit of the year the green was in ii.stclass order, and the above olliciali deserve a word of praise. Shortly after 2.15 p.m.. Mr. Jamas Roulston (president of the club) de Iclared the green open for the 1!J" 1921 season. In the course of hi; address Mr. Roulston said: -
"Ladies and (gentlemen -I have now a very pleasant duty to perform, and that is to declare the Pukekohe bowling green open for play for the season Ib2o-iii2l. In doing so I would like, on behalf of the club, to extend a hearty welcome to the uniting bowlers and their- lady friends. 1 trust they will have a very enjoyable afternoon, that they will arrive home safely, and in the days to come look back with pleasure to the fact that they were good enough to come along and help make our opening day a success. # "I am glad to say that matters in connexion With the club are particularly bright, and the prospects for the incoming season very good. Our club membership is increasing by leaps and bounds. We have recently purchased another piece of property so that we can lay down another green to provide room for the increased membership. The standard of play is improving year by year, and in this connexion the club owes a great deal to Mr. George Armstrong. "I am not going to venture any opinion about the gr.een, except to say that if care snd attention on the part of the green superintendent and the deputy green superintendent, who are very enthusiastic workers, can make a good playing green, then you certainly will have nothing to complain of. 1 would also extend a hearty welcome to the new members; we consider them our best asset, as no club can prosper that is not strengthened year by year by a number of additional members. '"I would like, on behalf of the club, to give a special vote of thanks to the ladies, and I am sure I voice the opinion of the members when I say we are under a great obligation for what the ladies are doing, and have done, in the past to assist the club. We are very fortunate in the fact that the ladies of the district have taken a kqecn interest in the welfare of our club, and the various functions by it have always had their willing assistance. They have also on many occasions sacrificed their peisonal eon.fort and had their home arrangements upset to permit their men-folk to play the good old game. "1 would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members for the honour conferred on me in making me your president: it is one I appreciate very much, and one I will always look back to with pride. "In conclusion, I would like to thank the past presidents for the good work done by them, as we are all well aware thai their untiring efforts in the past (the pick am!'shovel work as it weiv) laid the foundations of .sun-ess and have made it possible to have this opening." The president then called on Mrs. Itoulstoii to thiow the first jack, which she accomplished amid applause.
