PUKEKOHE BEAUTY SPOT.

PROPOSED SCENIC RESERVE. COUNCIL'S ACTION. For some time past the Borough Council has been negotiating for the acquirement of an area of land for the purpose of a scenic reserve. The , most suitable in the neighbourhood < is no doubt Mr. E. Roose's property, j situated on the Doctor's Hill. At 1 Wednesday night's meeting of the Borough Council, the Mayor reported i that he and members of the council ; had inspected the property, and were satisfied that in the interests of the town, the property, comprising about i 22 acres, should be acquired as a scenic reserve. They had had an agreement drawn up, and Mr. Roose was willing to sell the land, which contained beautiful native bush, to the council for £IOO an acre, with £IOO deposit. Mr. Roose wanted the council to construct a road in order that he could cut up some of the adjoining land into quarter-acre sections, and have a road frontage on either side. Mr. Lawrie considered the roading conditions rather stringent, as Mr. Roose required the work done within two months. This, he thought, could not be done in the time. It was a fine lot of land for a scenic reserve, and it would be a pity if the council lost the opportunity of purchasing it. It may be possible for the council to obtain a grant from the Government to effect the purchase. At any rata they, could apply for a grant. Cr. Armstrong said a road could not be completed in 12 months. They could clear the proposed roadway by then, but to i '■ expect it completed in the 12 months • was out of the question. They 1 wanted the formation to settle bel fore constructing kerbing and chan- ' nelling. Eventually the Mayor, Crs. Armstrong and Daysh were appointed a sub-committee to deal with the matter, with a view of having the conditions modified. It was decided to call a public meeting at some fu- : ture date with the view of placing ' the position before the ratepayers.
