AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
MANUREWA ACTIVITIES.
A POPULAR MOVEMENT. A keen interest is being manifested by the young men of Manurewa towards the athletic activities of the district. A number of young men have banded together and have for some time been energetically engaged in arousing public interest in the welfare of healthy outdoor sport. A new departure in this direction has been inaugurated. Instead of having numerous clubs of various kinds,'under different control they have organised a body of young men who will control and further the interests of all brandies of sport, in place of a number of small clubs they have instituted one general body. It is a step towards co-operation and organisation, and should prove very successful. It will at least eliminate the petty strife which 'frequently exists between rival clubs. It is anticipated that a cricket club will enter the competitions this coming season, and a tennis club is already formed. Athletic sports are to be held once a year, and the district anticipates being represented in the Auckland football competitions next season. In connexion "with the sports road races are being held on Saturday next. The new club is at present handicapped by'the lack of playing areas, but it is hoped that the difficulty will be overcome in the near future. The Manurewa Town Board has at present an option over a portion of the Puriri Park estate, and the board at its last meeting favourably considered a deputation requesting the immediate improvement of this property. The young men oi ManurewJ have the energy and initiative required, and with the assistance that must come from the public, their venture should have every success.
