MANUREWA.
POST OFFICE AND SCHOOL.
The Department called for tenders for the erection of a post office j»r>d substantial additions to the schopl at Manurewa, but we have it .dn good authority that no one tendered for the work. The gradual increase in wages and the steady increase and scarcity of materials being no doubt the cause. People at Manurewa ire beginning to wonder what the next move will be with regard to the post office. The office is badly needed, the present one being totally inadequate to cope with the work, not to mention anything of its appearance. The work for the erection in brick of substantial additions to the school has been let to Mr. Thos. W. Bell, and all can rest assured of a good job if it is left in his hands. {
At the present time owing to the inadequacy of the accommodation at the school a large ijumber of children are being taught in the town hall. PROPERTY CHANGES. Properties have changed hands rapidly of late, and there are quite a number of newcomers to the district. Several of the places have changed hands two or three times during the last month or so. BUILDING OPERATIONS. That Manurewa is becoming one of the leading suburban residential localities is a foregone conclusion. During the last 12 months or so a large number of residences have been erected, and residence building is still proceeding apace, without any marked decrease. There is a building boom just now, but the boom would be greater still if materials and labour were more plentiful. The scarcity ol labour is holding up a number of important industries, and it is to be hoped a change in the position will soon be noticeable. The attraction to Manurewa is no doubt the excellent climate with which the district is blessed, together with the fact that it is healthy, being so high above sea level.
NEW' METHODIST CHURCH. We understand th.it the Methodists contemplate erecting a new church in a very short time. The present building will, we believe, be added to the present Sunday school f<u additional class-rooms. WESLEY CLUB.
The Wesley Club in connexion with thj Methodist .Church is proving ;i great success. Lust week a 11100k court trial by a jury was held, and it was an unqualified success. The church was crowded, and all thoroughly enjoyed the-. ent'.Mtainmeut. Among the various iPi-r.t"': w.i.; that of •" profiteering," and it caused no end of hilarity. The event went off without a hitch, and the club deserves credit for the manner in which the event was staged. To-night (Friday) the young men of the club will entertain their friends. At a later date the club will visit Papakura and give that town the benefit of their "show." PERSONAL. Mr. F. Lucas, the local riding foreman of works for the Manukau County Council, has accepted a posi-1 tion as an engineer in the Gisborne district. He has left Manurewa for Poverty Bay with his wife and family. PICTURE SHOW. The picture show is becoming more and more popular, and is beginning to be extensively patronised. The machinery is now running sweetly. Tomorrow night a number of sketches of Town Board candidates will be submitted. They Mf worth seeing.
