THE NEW SOUTH WALES CHEESE SURPLUS.

The New South Wales section of the butter pool committee has asked cheese makers to meet - this week (July 24) in Sydney. The Imperial Government, having bought the butter on the basis of 240s per cwt, or an advance of (>ss on last season's price, it will mean that if cheese producers cannot get a substantial advance on last year's export .ate of 10'jd per lb there will be chaos in the industry, and a drifting- back from cheese to butter making. To be on an equal footing, the cheese producer will require Is Id or Is I' .d per lb f.o.b. The pool committee has been in communication with its representatives. Messrs. Osborne and Sinclair, who have for some time been in London negotiating the butter business. It is probable that the conference will be asked to authorise the Commonwealth pool committee to negotiate for the sale of the cheese surplus through some other channel, in which, case the services of the two delegates who are on the spot in London would be available. There is a fairly' general impression in Sydney that if shipping space can be secured for cheese it should be possible to arrange a block sale on the basis of Is Id fo.b. or thereabouts.
