PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS

ABOLITION ADVOCATED.

The abolition of preference to unionists is advocated by the Hon. J. MacGregor in the following motion, of which he gave notice in tha Legislative Council recently:—-"That in the opinion of the Council (1) 166* tion 11 of the Industrial ConciltetkMß and Arbitration Act, 1918, which prevents loyal, patriotic and moderate workers from forming industrial unions under that Act, and paragraph (e) "of section 2 of the Act, em powers the Court to grant prefer-'* ence of employment to members of industrial unions should oe repealed on the ground that the combined effect of such enactments is to compel workers to become members of a union as a condition of employment, to prevent workers who join a union j from taking any interest in its af- ' fairs, and to enabfp a few extremists ■*- who are neither loyal nor patriotic to dominate the unions and so cause constant unrest; (2) all provisions in awards and industrial made under the Act which give preSE ference of employment to membel!ppP of one industrial union should be a&Kjjr nulled." .
