FOOTBALL

PUKEKOHE 16, DEFEAT NEWTON 3.

A MEDIOCRE EXHIBITION.

The Newton senior football team journeyed to Pukekohe on Saturday to try'conclusions with the Pukekohe club.'The game took place in the Domain in the presence of a fairly large attendance of spectators, but taking everything into consideration a very mediocre exhibition of Rugby was witnessed, especially from an Auckland te;im. Thg home team, which was somewhat strengthened by the inclusion of A. Wray, L. Balme (Bom-, bay), E. Revell and R. Smeed (Tuakau), all of whom played good games, had no difficulty in leaving the'field victors by 1G points to 3. Newton set the oval in motion against a breeze and the sun. Wray returned, and the home forwards rushed the oval to Newton territory. Leighton obtained and dived over a few minutes after the commencement. He failed to enhance: Pukekohe 3, Newton i>.

Just before half-time several of the Pukekohe team mulled and allowed Monaghan to dive over. The kick at goal was fruitless: Pukekohe 3, Newton 3, The game up to this stage had been very tame indeed, but upon resuming after the spell both sides livened up and the game gradually improved. From a forward rush, headed by Higginson, Bilkey and Higginson got over. Leighton converted: Pukekohe 8, Newton 3, The reds now livened up, and soon after the finest piece of play ,of the day was witnessed. From a scrum in neutral territory H. Bilkey obtained, passed to Blake, who threw to Wray, who in turn transferred to leighton. The latter beautifully cut in and beat a couple of men. He passed to R. Snteed, who could have scored, but he delivered it to Syme, who scored in a good position. Leighton made no mistake with the kick: Pukekohe 13, Newton 3.

Soon after Wilson broke away, but overran, and Balme, who was following up, snapped up the oval, wriggled his way onward, passed to Short, who in turn jfti/jed to Revell, who dived over, another pretty piece of work. L. Balme's kick, a good one, i'ell short: Pukekohe 16, Newton 3. The game ended shortly after. Mr. Bert Clarke proved an efficient and impartial referee. Mackie, one of the visitors, received several bad knocks, and had to leave the field. He was quite recovered when he departed for home.

After the match both teams were entertained at dinner at the Pukekohe Hotel, Mr. A. Wilson, on behalf of the Newton team, thanking the Pukekohe club, for its hospitality. Mr. R. Fulton, president of the Pukekohe club, thanked the visitors for coming to Pukekohe.

The Newton team returned home thoroughly satisfied with their day's outing.
