LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
An episode occurred in King St., Pukekohe, which shows how careful riders and drivers ought to be when the road is slippery. Just at dark a young man was coming quickly along, when his horse's I'our feet suddenly shot out to one side, and the rider and horse came down very heavily on their sides. Fortunately neither received very serious injury, and after a few minutes the rider was able to remount and proceed on his journey.
Whether the high cost of living is compelling iishonesty among a certain class, or whether the after-ef-fects of the great war include a lowering of the moral standard, would be hard to say (says the Napier Daily Telegraph), but it does appear as though more petty thieving is rife now than formerly. Napier South appears to be a happy hunting ground, and several minor depredations have been reported, including the theft of fowls, and firewood.
At the last monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council the salaries of the engineer and assistant were raised. Evidently there is a general recognition of the fact that salaried men who have no union to secure increases of pay for them cannot now make ends meet on the same rate of remuneration as was paid in 1914, for we notice that the Pukekohe Borough Council at the meeting on Wednesday night increased its clerk's salary by £SO per year and not before it was due, either.
A new chemist's shop is now opened at the corner of King and Edinburgh Streets, the proprietor being Mr. W. G. Brosnahan, late of Ellerslie. Mr. Brosnahan has been in the chemistry profession for the past twenty years, and has had a wide and varied experience. He served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces for about two years in the mounteds, where his professional services were at certain periods made use of in the medical unit. The pharmacy is equipped with an up-to-date stock of pharmaceutical requisites and the fittings and appointments are of the latest design. The renovated building, with its large windows and suspended verandah (the latter a very desirable feature in any shop) makes a decided improvement to the corner on which it stands. An announcement is advertised on page 4.
