The Times. Published on Tuesday and Friday Afternoons. Motto: Public service. FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1920. "SOMETHING DOING."

The absence of any visible signs that practical steps were being taken to provide the borough of Pukekohe with those services for which the ratepayers sanctioned a loan of £54,000 has induced us on occasion to criticise adversely the seeming inactivity of the Pukekohe Borough Council. We are therefore pleased to note, by the reports of committees of the council 1 (published in another column) that at last there appears to be "something doing." A new engine for temporary relief purposes is now installed, and the town should soon get the benefit of this accretion to the means of providing mechanical energy at the power-house. Preparations are also being made in connexion with the larger and permanent extensions which will result in a 24 hours' service, and tenders are about to be called for the materials, in order 'to be ready, as nearly as may be, for thegarrival of the new engines and plant from abroad. The important matter of -drainage is also being pushed;ori, and prices are being secured for the supply of piping. We sincerely trust that the expectation 6f being able to N make a start shortly in getting metal from its own quarry will be realised by the council, for the borough roads are a standing reproach and are the object of condemnation by residents and outsiders alike. On the whole, the reports we refer 'to are the most gratifying that have emanated from the council for a long time, and indicate that thei members are becoming; imbued with a little of that vitalising energy necessary to the carrying out of the large and responsible tasks which the £84,000 loan makes provision for. Ratepayers and the public generally will have cause for satisfaction if the progressiveness displayed proves of enduring quality.
