COST OF FOOTWEAR.
An analysis of the discrepancy between the open market prices of hides and the retail cost of footwear recently appeared in the leading columns of this paper. It was shown that the people of this Dominion are paying much higher figures for boots and shoes that are warranted by the hides market, and that investigation is urgently needed in the interests of the public. We are, therefore, pleased to note the following press report of Parliamentary proceedings during the week:— "Mr. Powdrell (Patea) gave notice to ask the Minister in Charge of the Board of Trade whether in view of control of hides and fixations of prices being lifted in New Zealand, and a fall of over 40 per cent, having taken place in hide prices, he will instruct the board to make inquiries into boot manufacturers' recent price lists as issued on June 1, : showing a rise of from 2U per cent, to IT 1 -, per cent., and report if the rise is warranted and the reason therefore."
