Published on Tuesday and Friday Afternoons. Motto: Public service. FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1920. PROPOSED PRODUCE GROWERS ASSOCIATION.
Better organisation of the farmers, by the farmers, for the iarmers has been consistently advocated in these columns, and although what we have in mind is a thorough and systematic organisation throughout the Dominion, we welcome the prospect of a small, but important, pro-spective-additions to the ranks of organised formers. An announcement appears- Jin this issue, convening a j meeting jfll produce growers to be held in Hall on Wednesday, July 21, with the object of, forming a produce growers' association. This is a step in the right direction, for it must be obvious that in his buying and selling the producer is liable to be placed at numerous disadvantages if he is merely a unit, and has no organisation behind him, and is therefore unable to employ labour, buy, sell, or transport goods in bulk. It is too early just yet to particularise the phases of the work the proposed organisation mayundertake; it must crawl before it can walk, but we have no doubt whatever that if the membership is numerous, and a spirit of mutual goodwill prevails, the proposed producers' association will be the means of conferring many and .aried benefits on its members; and furthermore, as the welfare of the whole community is based on and subject to the degree of prosperity, the producers enjoy, the organisation should prove of benefit to the general public.
