The Manurewa Town Board is asking for permission to erect a tollgate on Great South Road at Manurewa. Also, the board advocates the duplication of the railway line from Papakura to Auckland. The Te Aroha News states that when the Te Aroha borough by-laws were being framed they were so confusing that the Mayor actually voted against an amendment proposed by himself. In connection with "The Better 'Ole'' Company appearing in Pukekohe on Tuesday next, it is interesting to note that Mr. Lionel Walsh is in charge, and is playing the part of Old Bill. Mr. Walsh is well known to Pukekohe, having appeared here in "Within The Law," "Camille," "The Man Who Stayed at Home," and other plays. In Pukekohe just now there is a more than ordinarily striking proof the undoubted superiority of newspaper over hoarding or roof advertisements. One of the latter sets out that the proprietor nas full supplies of timber and coal on hand —obviously a misstatement. Not only that, but the proprietor is now right out of the business.

Mr. Buchanan, who was judge of Ayrshires at the Franklin A. and P. Show, tells of an amusing experience at the recent show at Palmerston North. Ohe of the harmless inmates of a mental hospital, who had been placed in charge of cattle for the show, came along and had difficulty in gaining admittance because he had left his ticket at home. Mr. Buchanan explained the position to the gatekeeper, and the man was admitted. When he got inside he turned round and remarked, with forceful adjectives, that at the place he came from it was hard to get out once you were in, but at the show it was hard to get in once you were out.
