MOTOR TAX.
O. different occasions recently the "Times'' has advocated, through the medium of its leading columns, a tax on motors, and that the revenue thereby derived should be applied as part payment of the cost of the maintenance of arteri.il roads. A similai coincidence has occurred in this connexion as happened shortly after our advocacy of the removal of the restrictions on the sale of hides, namely, that the things we have suggested have been adopted by the Government in the former case, and are about to be in the latter instance. Of course, these are on!) coincidences, and not direct cause and effect, but they at least indicate that in its policy on publicmatters the "Times" is on sound and progressive lines, in keeping with advanced thought politically and economically. Hearing on the motor tax proposal the following press wire from Wellington was published yesterday:— "The Government intends this session to legislate in the direction of taxing motor-ears. The basis is not yet quite settled, and there is jtrong difference of opinion on the subject among the motor organisations. The Budget will probably indicate what is to be done, and the money will be specially allocated to make provision of better arterial roads,
"A consolidation of the Municipal Corporal inns Act has been introduced by the ]l>n. (',. .]. Anderson (Minister of Internal Affairs). it contains no alterations in policy, but it is intended to bring down a number of important amendments contained ill a supplementary order paper, and a motor taxation scheme will then he included in the measure."
