PAPAKURA BOROUGH COUNCIL
(Continued from Friday). Works Committee Report.
The Works Committee reported as, follows on work done during the month:— The work during the month has been mainly taken up with attending to a general clean-up of watertables, blocked culverts, etc., much silt having been driven down with recent heavy rains. Wc,ht trucks o' scoria have come. to hand. This material has been carted and spread on the roads as far as possible to prevent the roads becoming worse, and to tide us over until other material is available. Three trucks of metal have also been carted and spread on West Road. We at present are having difficulty to get supplies of metal owing to shortage of trucks. 1 therefore respectfully suggest that concrete kerb and channel work couid be gone on with, providing v:e can get cement. We have some material on hand, and as this work has been before the council and agreed to, it might be to our advantage to get that portion along Harris Street past the new school completed while w* are held up for supplies for read work. I do not anticipate any trouble 1 getting supplies for this paititulai , class of work, as we won't require a great quantity if the weather should . hold fine. Certain formation work on Paerata Road could be done, namely, , the straightening of the road by cut- '. ting and widening the lil"iug. Ims 1 work cannot be done successfully in wet weather. The portion of Kast Street path from Totara Avenue connecting with the present concrete kerb at Dr. Wake's will cost M) 5 to complete with kerb and channel* and metal from channel to put in with present metal. The channel to be turned at Station Road. Cr. Daysh said regarding the kast f Street footpath that the footpath be- • tween Dr. Campbell-Smith's comer t and Dr. Wake's residence was partif cularly bad, as storm-water was scouring out the path considerably, n He did not know whether any loan l> money was allocated for this street; »> but with'regard to Harris Street, n loan money had been allocated, and f he urged this work be done as soon d as possible. They found a difficulty !1 just now to keep the whole of the >• staff engaged (and they had a really 10 fine lot of workmen), and with a "- view of keeping them engaged, he d thought the work should be proceed- '" ed with. By expending loan money ,f they would ease the general account. 0 Cr. Patterson said the work in Hars ris Street had already been authorn jsed. v With refreence to Paerata Road, Cr Daysh said the council had agreed ? * to commence the road as soon as the :t County Council had completed its work thereon. Before the Borough Council proceeded with its portion there was a certain amount ot 1 straightening that required to be ;* done, and he thought the foreman H should put the men on to do this I. work. {• Cr. Patterson objected to the crust .' of any road being broken during the winter months. . e Cr. Daysh £aid the crust of the p road would not be damaged. He • s ' merely suggested straightening por- . tions of it at present. ,[> Cr. Keith said the portion referred to bv Cr. Daysh was widening lt work and* attention to a culvert. .y The report was adopted in its eng, tirety. t- Finance. s - Accounts amounting to £928 Os 7(1 l > pere passed for paymest. '• The district fund account showed a debit balance of £2199 5s Id. ir The Mayor reported that up to the is present f4OO worth of debentures Jt had been sold locally, and he was 1 " positive numerous more would be dis ■ A posed of. He was certain the loar ts would be floated locally, and tn< n " council would thus save procurator d ' fees etc. He added, that by raising l 5 the money locally it spoke in glowing i d terms of the prosperity of the town Ic and the ratepayers' confidence in th< tt " council "to carry out their wishes.
