RIFLE SHOOTING.

SENIOR CADETS IN AREA E. The annual musketry course of senior cadets, Area E, No. 1 group, New Zealand Defence Forces, for the year ending May 31, 1920, took place at Pukekohe and various other drill j centres, according to the companies to which the senior cadet contestants belonged. Owing to the instructors and the area ofceer (Lieutenant A. R. Hatt) being engaged at Trentham, the courses were a little later this year than previously. When the shooting took place the results were good considering the unfavourable weather conditions and the fact of a very few rifles to choose from. Owing to the instructors being away, and consequently their work got behind, the practises were got through hurriedly in order to complete the course by the end of the military vear.

Sergeant-Major Milne, of Waiuku, took charge of the shooting at Waiuku and Patumahoe; Lieutenant A. R. Hatt, at Pukekohe; Sergeant-Ma-jor Drinnan at Papakura and Otahuhu. The standard of shooting among the cadets in this area compares favourably with any other area in the Dominion. For the year ending May 31, 1919, the Waiuku company made the highest score of any cadet company in New Zealand. The company was' then under the command of Ser-geant-Major Gillespie. Each year cups are competed for by the respective companies. For this purpose, and for the encouragement of senior cadet training, Lady Godley donated each senior cadet lompany throughout New Zealand with a silver cup, the winner to hold the cup for a period of about 12 months. Locil company winners for season ending May 31, 1920, are as follows: — 71st Company, Pukekohe.—Ladet Gordon Fitness., Score 100. 70th Company, Papakura.—Cadet A. J. Henderson. Score 94. 69th Company, Qtahuhu.—Cadet W. Montgomerie, Mangere. Score 99. 72nd Waiuku.—Cadet O'Reilly. Score 105. 77th Company, Mercer—Ladet 1. Gillibrand. Score 90. The scores are totalled out of five classification practises at 25 jards miniature target.
