BUSY TIMBER MILL

CONTINUOUS SUPPLIES ASSURED THRIVING MERCER INDUSTRY. With the shortage of timber, and consequent insufficiency of houses pressing hardly on the community, it is a hopeful sign indeed to see a timber mill in this district "going at top,." as is Mr. C. Roose's "Waikato River Mill" at Mercer. Inter viewed by a "Times" representative yesterday, Mr. Roose said the milt was turning out a daily average of 10,000 ft of sawn timber per day, mostly pinus insignus and kahikatea. The supply of timber was assured, as he had various blocks of bush to work from, at Puni, Ngaruawahia, Whatawhata, Cambridge, and other places. He admitted that his predecessors had nqlt been able to make a permanent success of the Mercer mill, but he had considerably the act-' vantage of them, inasmuch as he understood the navigation of the Waikafto River very thoroughly, which was one of the most important factors, as the mill was dependent on the waterway for its supplies of logs. He had no fear on this score. Three Milligp Feet Kauri. Mr. Roose, when asked what other timbers were likely to be available, replied that' he had secured three million feet of kauri, at -the pack of Glen Murray, in |the Te Akau district. This was all good bush, many of the trees being Bft in diameter. Owing to the roading to be done, and the tramline to be laid, it would be 13 monjths before this kauri would be available, and for similar reasons it would take a year to get to work on a rimu bush he had secured. In tlhe near future Mr. Roose hopes \o have stocks of certain classes of timber that are in particular demand by farmers, and notification that these stocks are available will be advertised in ithe "Times" when the supply is ready for the market.
