SEPTUAGENARIAN CLERK

OF MANUKAU COUNTY.

ADDRESS PRESENTED.

Some time ago the Manukau County Council arranged for a social evening to be tendered to the retiring county clerk, Mr. Alexander Bell, but unfortunately through the indisposition of Mr. ( Bell and other circumsltarices, it was found necessaiy to cancel the function. In view of the large amount of sickness prevailing, the council decided to abandon the' original proposal md called a special meeting for the purpose of presenting Mr. Bell with an illuminated addness as a token of regard and esteem for his past services. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, Sir Frederick Lang, M.P.. making the presentation on behalf of the council. Sir / F'iiederick stated he had known MBell intimately during many past years, and he considered it a great honour to be invited to , tender the gift to one so highly held in inspect and esteem, not only by local body representatives, but by all with whom Mr. Bell had coAejn contact. He could personally endorse all the sentiments contained in fhe address, a<nd he joined with all in wishing Mr. and Mrs Bell long life and happiness in their retiremHlr. Bell has been connected with Ijcal bodies for the past 37 years, having been at times clerk to the Tamaki West. Elleiislie, Mount Wellington. Orakei. East Tamaki and I akuranga Road Boards, and clerk of the Manukau Courtcil since its inception in 1912. Mr. Bell still retains the clerkship of the Orakei andl Pakuranga Road Boards, although in | his 70th year. The chairman and members of the council all expressed their great appreciation of Mr. Bell's, past services and integrity. ' Mr. Bell very suitably uesponded in accepting the address, and ouoted figures showing the great growth in the council's business transactions during the past few years. , The council afterwards adjourned to luncheon, accompanied by Sir Frederick Lang.
