The Times. Published on Tuesday and Friday Afternoons. Motto: Public service. FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1920. MUNICIPAL HOUSING; SCHEME.

Fo v ' seveial months past the "Times" has been pitiently waiting to learn whether the Pukekohe Borough Council intended to try and deal effectively with the housing problem or not. Cn more than one occasion we have devoted ou* leading columns to the advocacy of this project. Some persons, tired of waiting, have gone rfo far as to express the opinion that there; were too many influential people in Pukekohe who were inteifcsted in selling house property, and keeping up the prices thereof, for any housing scheme to be tackled. This was ratheM unfair criticism, and certainly no member of the Pukekohe Borough Council was subject to or guided by such hurtful influences. To a m:in, the council is in favour of providing workers' dwellings, but, on account of the big loan proposals it has had to get in order and deal with during recent months, the housing problem had to be temporalily shelved. However, it will be noted by a report in this issue that the first practical steps have been taken, and we have no doubt that a sufficient number of suitable applicants will grasp the opportunity that will be affoiVled them of buying their < wn houses on the time-payment system. Small though the first experimental scheme must necessarily be (probably ten houses) we have no hesitation in saying that, if catried out successfully, this work will prove one of th<; most beneficial municipal enterprises ni secondary -importance that has y<?t been accomplished in Pukekohe.
