ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submit- < ted by Engineer J. F. McArthur to j the Franklin County Council on [ Thursday, and adopted:— t Government Grants. ! During the month proposals have ; been approved and authorities re- ' ceived for the expenditure of the : following grants and subsidies, viz.: < Be Loe Road, £IOO (£1 for SI). Whangarata) to Waikato River, £75 (£1 for £1). Smeed's Road (Tuakau), £2OO (£1 for £1) on account of £6OO (£1 for £1). Mangatangi to Miranda, £IOOO (£1 for £1). Taurangaruru to Waipipi main road, £368 (£1 for £1). Proposals were submitted for the expenditure of £6OO grant on Puke- ! kohe East to Ramarama Road, via i Ream's, for construction of road and i new bridge. Owing to the impossibility of obtaining a better grade than 1 in 9 after unduly raising the bridge level, the Public Works Department consider it advisable to ascertain what would be the cost of a deviation to reduce the grade to say 1 in 15. In the meantime the proposals already submitted are being held over. Contract* Advertised.

Tenders were invited for six contracts, returnable as follows: Contracts Nos. 404 and 417 on the 22nd day of April, and contracts Nos. 418, 419. 420 and 421 on the 4th day of May. Contract No. 421—For forming 29 chains of the Hunua to Clevedon Road. Tender received from J. Aitchison. Contract price, £292 8s 4d. I would recommend that the following tenders be accepted:— Contract No. 404—E Holmes, £lB6 10s 6d. Contract No. 419 J. Aitchison, £IBO 3s Bd. Contract No. 420—A. McNeil and party, £l2O 12s Id. The expenditure under Contract No. 417 is to come out of the Awhitu special loan and proposed Government subsidy. As it is doubtful whether the Public Works Department will grant a subsidy on shells for road purposes I would suggest that M. Gleeson's tender for £lB6 9s 8d not be accepted at the present time. Mr. J. Aitchison's tender for Contract No. 421 of £292 8s 4d being considerably over the estimated cost, I would not recommend the acceptance of same.

Land for Foreman's Residence and Quarry, Paerata.—At last meeting of your council I was instructed to get particulars as to the suitability of four acres of land and quarry at Paerata for foreman's residence, and, quarrying. The area available is in my opinion well situated for the above purposes, and can be acquired for V 450. 1 might mention that the greater portion of the stone required for metalling roads under the Paerata special loan of £6OOO will be taken from the quarry in question, and if acquired by your council an up-to-date plant could be installed ind the metal obtained by cheaper iiethods than at present existing. Boundary Road, Awhitu to Waipiu Ridings.—As instructed, an infraction was made, of the portion of •Ms road giving access to Sections 47 and 406 and Block XI, Awhitu ; 1). The road has never been form>d and is at present being used for •arming purposes. The estimated •ost of construction to enable vehicular traffic to give access to the ,bove sections would be upwards of 200.
